Summer Training / Course Opportunity for Washington State Rural Educators

Funded through Service-Learning Washington, OSPI/Learn and Serve and the Corporation for National and Community Service

The Service-Learning Washington Training Cadre is pleased to offer a 2006 summer training option for rural Washington Schools interested in expanding their knowledge and practice of service learning and civic engagement.

We begin with a 3 to 6 hour training (at participant school/community sites) which is available at no cost. During the training, participants will develop a preliminary action plan, which integrates service-learning with their existing curriculum. Clock hours are available for the training.

Participants can receive an additional 45 clock hours or 5 credits by simply completing the work they begin in the training through the on-line course described below.

Course Title: Service-Learning in Rural Communities

Credit: 5 credits / 45 clock hours through Heritage Institute/Antioch University Seattle

Cost: $175.00 for credit option / $75.00 for clock-hour option

Purpose: To encourage linkages between Service-Learning Washington (Washington State Service-Learning Advocacy/Steering Group) and the National Service-Learning Rural Online Network, to support high quality service-learning practice and ongoing support. Training Cadre coordinators will introduce Washington State rural educators to resources available through Service-Learning Washington and the National Rural Online Network.

Benefits for Participating Educators: Teachers can earn 5 credits (or 45 clock hours) through Heritage Institute/Antioch University – linking service-learning strategies with participants’ existing curriculum. Teacher participants come away with authentic projects, ready to implement in the fall.

Process: Training Cadre Coordinators will travel to participants’ school/community site between June and August of 2006, to engage staff/community partners in a 3-5 hour no cost “in person” workshop. The workshop will be to introduce participants to the National Online Rural Network, and the resources available through the network and through Service-Learning Washington. Participants will then complete their final hours for credit in the “online” course, which will be introduced during the workshop.

To Register: Please contact Service-Learning Washington Training Cadre Co-Coordinators: Susie Richards at 360-221-6198, ext. 3115 / srichards@sw.wednet.edu or Chris Burt at 360-331-5920 / cburt@whidbey.com for more information or to reserve dates for this opportunity.
